In the second of our exclusive All Angels events of 2022, on Sunday March 13th we are bringing you the opportunity to join a local Lambourn National Hunt trainer at a Pre-Cheltenham Festival Sunday lunch, held here in the Tasting Barn at Church farm. Sunday March 13th, Pre-Cheltenham Festival Sunday Lunch 12 noon Welcome drinks, £100pp
Now if you’ve never been to Cheltenham Festival and its famous Gold Cup race, you’ve missed a real treat and if anything could persuade you to go and join in the craic, this will be it – you’ll get a real insight into the event and the horses (and possibly enough tips to win back the cost of the event) from one of the main NH trainers with skin in the game.
It’s an Irish invasion: Guinness is consumed by the tanker full, and legend has it that there was soul searching among race-loving Irish priests one year when it was rumoured that the Pope was going to visit Ireland during the Festival week. There’s a famous pub overlooking the racecourse that we used to stop off at on the first day of the races: we arrived at 11-30am one year to an absolute crisis - someone had failed to order the Guinness and it had run dry - before the first race had even started. You meet some great characters too, such as the guy who had bought a beautiful and expensive bronze of a horse for his wife “that way she’ll think I’ve had winnings and I won’t have to explain how I’ve lost everything…”; or the two guys playing cards who’d been coming to Cheltenham for over 20 years but never once made it to the course.
And then there are the horses and the racing. So difficult to describe. The cheer that goes up at the start of the first race of the Festival is spine tingling, as is seeing those magnificent, proud creatures thundering round the course clearly loving every minute of the chase with fearless jockeys astride. And such famous names: Arkle, Golden Miller, Mill House and more recently Desert Orchid, Dawn Run, Best Mate and Kauto Star.
And if that isn’t enough, we will enter you into a free draw for the winning horse at this year’s Gold Cup: if it comes home, we’ll deliver two bottles of All Angels Sparkling Rosé 2016 and one bottle of All Angels Classic Cuvée 2014 Long Aged on Lees. Although places are limited to 20 there may be less than 20 horses in the race so we’ll double up on horses in the draw: who knows, you and your guest may win six bottles! Please email [email protected] to reserve a place at this special event - a £50-00 deposit will secure your booking. I’m looking forward to seeing the lucky ones among you on 13th March, 2022. Best, Mark
