Nestled in the Berkshire countryside just five minutes from Newbury, All Angels is one of England’s most characterful small vineyards. Founded by former City lawyer Mark Darley on the historic Church Farm estate in Enborne, every corner of this working vineyard tells a story of patience, passion and a deep respect for nature.
A guided tour of All Angels is more than a wine tasting. You will walk through time, history and the seasons, build your knowledge of what vineyard and winery work it takes to produce premium of English sparkling wine, hear about the extraordinary lengths we go to in ensuring each vine is optimised and each vintage is unique, as well as a chance to meet some of the team; Mark, Kay and Christine.
From the moment you arrive you are welcomed into our passion, from the ancient parish church of St Michael and All Angels that gives the estate its name, to the wildflower meadows buzzing with bees, to the vines themselves, tended row by row with meticulous attention that Owner & Founder Mark describes simply as ‘respect for Mother Nature, we will leave the land in a better state than we found it'.

It might be standing among the vines on a clear Berkshire day. Or when Mark & Christine Darley or wine expert Kay Smitham DipWSET hand you a glass of the newly released Classic Cuvée 2019 and you taste six years of patience in a single sip. Or perhaps it's when you hear that the wine in your glass comes from the fruit that was picked from the vines in these vineyards, and that nothing about that process was rushed or compromised.
Whatever the moment, our guests leave with something unexpected: a real connection to the wine and the place it comes from.
The Setting
The historic estate is a short 5 minute drive from Newbury and just 45 minutes from London Paddington, surrounded by rolling farmland and ancient woodland. The vineyard takes its name from the twelfth-century parish church of St Michael and All Angels that sits at the estate boundary, next to the smallest vineyard. Today, the wildflower meadows hum with bees in summer, the wildlife corridors run through the vines, and the hand-tended rows of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier that make up All Angels' small, preciously cultivated harvests.
What Happens on the Day
A guided tour at All Angels typically lasts two to three hours and is designed to be as relaxed and welcoming as possible. There is no dress code, no wine knowledge required, and no sense that you need to know what 'lees ageing' means before you arrive (though you will by the time you leave).
The afternoon or evening begins with a walk through the vines, guided by a member of the team who can answer your questions about English sparkling wine. You'll learn about the growing seasons, the challenges of a cool-climate vineyard, and the practices All Angels adopts to produce the exceptional sparkling wines that you will be tasting later.
From the vineyard, guests move into the world of traditional-method winemaking. The process is explained simply and engagingly: how classic grapes from these very fields are pressed, fermented and then left to rest on lees for six years or more, which is far beyond industry norms, to develop the depth and complexity that defines All Angels' wines.
During this you will experience the tasting of their English sparkling wine. Three from the All Angels range poured and you will be guided through the flavours, aromas and different characteristics while being encouraged to share your own thoughts in a relaxed and friendly environment. No. 36, with its softer bubbles and gentler acidity, is a revelation for many visitors who assumed sparkling wine is only for toasts. Here it flows naturally from scallops to roast chicken, from soft cheeses to summer pudding. 'The bottle you always want to have chilling in the fridge,' as Mark says.
The Seasons Make Every Visit Different
Part of what makes All Angels special is that the experience shifts with the calendar.
- Spring tours follow the first bud growth, when the vineyard starts to feel alive.
- Summer brings long, golden tastings on warm evenings with alfresco pairings.
- Harvest in September and October is the most dramatic time to visit, the smell of ripe fruit in the air, the urgency and joy of picking, the knowledge that this is the moment the next vintage is determined.
